Slackin' on the Savagin'
I know I've been rather absent from posting characters these last two months. I have a lot of pictures ready and waiting for me to Savage them. I've been working two jobs and the second it taking most my free time. I will get back to this full swing once my brain is no longer mush from lack of sleep.
This particular second job is totally worth it. It's my dream job and it just landed in my lap. If the plan works out (and at this point I have no reason to believe it will not) the second job would become my primary job, and my current primary job would cease to be. When that happens, expect an explosion of postings.

Mountain Troll (Harry Potter)
Description: Big, Dumb, Ugly and Gray.
Mountain Trolls hail from (amazingly enough) the Mountains. Trolls originated in Scandanavia but are now found all over Europe. They feed on flesh of any kind they can get their hands on; they are aggressive and violent, stand an average of 12 feet and speak a language of grunting and pointing that only other trolls seem to understand.
Attributes: Agility d6, Smarts d4, Strength d12+2, Spirit d6, Vigor d10
Skills: Fighting d8, Guts d10, Intimidation d10, Notice d6, Throwing d6
Pace: 8 Parry: 6 Toughness: 10 (1)
Gear: Wooden Club (Str)
Special Abilities: Armor +1 (Rubbery Hide), Claws Str+d4, Improved Sweep (May attack all adjacent Foes), Size +3 (Tall, Lanky, Big Belly, Generally Over 12' tall)

More About Trolls.
Creation Notes:
I started to create the troll as I would any Savage Worlds monster by assigning attributes that seemed to fit—since it is a creature and not really a playable character. Then I remembered there was a troll in the Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition. Comparing my Troll so far to the SW:EX Troll I found that they were pretty close already. I copied the SW:EX Troll and then modified it as needed. As this particular toy is a Harry Potter Mountain Troll, I made it a little bigger, a little dumber, and a little less invulnerable.

More About Disney's Chip and Mrs. Potts.
Creation Notes:
I created these characters as human, because they are humans changed to construct form. I then gave some additional skills, powers, hindrances, etc. Based on the form they were magically given by the Enchantress. (i.e. After Creating them I give then the Small Hindrance and apply the Modifier to the toughness) With Chip I cheated a little and gave him two Major Hindrances. I figure to Major Hindrances give the same number of points to spend as One Major and two minor hindrances. But then When i gave him the Small modifier. I only applied the Effects, and did not allow him to spend the 2 power points that come with a Major Hindrance.

Not a bit of him scraggly or scrawny
And ev'ry last inch of him covered with hair
No one hits like Gaston
Matches wits like Gaston
In a spitting match nobody spits like Gaston

More About Disney's Gaston.
Creation Notes:
At first when I created Gaston, I did so taking the lyrics of the Song and Gaston's beliefs seriously and he came out a Legendary level character, which didn't feel right, at most he should be seasoned like The Beast, so I looked at the skills and edges again. I took away a lot of fighting edges and left him with very attractive and brawny—I fudged a little in giving him Very Attractive (Following the Rules he should have Attractive or have 5 more XP making him Veteran status—but I felt that Very Attractive and just the Seasoned rank fit the character better); I then pared his skills down to where he is capable of a lot of things, but where he thinks he's the best at everything, he's really not. Shooting, Fighting, and Intimidation are all he's really good at, and he has used those to build a larger than life reputation for himself.

Disney's Genie
Description: Made of Smoke.
Prisoner of the lamp. Phenomenal Cosmic Powers—itty-bitty living space. He must grant three wishes to he who possesses the lamp..
Rank: Legendary
Attributes: Agility d12+2, Smarts d12+2, Strength d12+2, Spirit d12+2, Vigor d12+2
Skills: Arcane Background Sorcery d12+4, Guts d12+4, Notice d12+4, Taunt d12+4
Pace: 10 Parry: 2 Toughness: 6 Charisma: 0
Hindrances: Slave (MA)—Powers are limited by his status as a slave, he can do anything he wants—but only wishes made by the master of the lamp have any permanence. As far as wishes go he has stated that he cannot kill, make people fall in love or raise the dead*.
Edges: Arcane Background: Sorcery, Jack-of-all-trades
Gear: Oil Lamp (To Which he is Bound), Bracers (Symbol of Slavery)
Power Points: Infinite
Powers: Super Sorcery
——————–——————–——————–——————–————————————
More About Disney's Genie.
I drew upon Necessary Evil for the handling of his powers. Super Sorcery allows a character to use any power in the setting. I haven't posted for a while because I've been hung up on how to create Genie, and he's the first that I just couldn't create as a playable character; he is simply too powerful—while at the same time being completely limited in said powers. Due to his Godlike power, I had to create Genie as an NPC; he's still a wild card, but he doesn't follow the player character rules.
*He clarifies that he can raise the dead, but it only creates a Zombie and it's not a pretty picture, and thus he does not enjoy doing it. This fits savage worlds perfectly, as one of the standard powers is Zombie.

Disney's Phoebus
Description: Golden Hair, Dark Eyes, and not the only person in the film with a Goat.
Summoned to Paris by the Minister of Justice, Jean Claude Frollo, to act as Caption of the Guard after a two decade absense; Phoebus finds that Frollo is so caught up in his self righteousnes that he's declared war against the Gypsies and is willing to do anything (including, ordering the death of an innocent family) to discover the location of the Gypsy Hideout known as the Court of Miracles.
Rank: Seasoned
Attributes: Agility d6, Smarts d8, Strength d6, Spirit d8, Vigor d6
Skills: Fighting d10, Guts d6, Notice d6, Shooting d8, Riding d8, Taunt d6
Pace: 6 Parry: 7 Toughness: 5 Charisma: 2
Hindrances: Heroic, Loyal, Wanted (After Refusing to Burn Down The Mill With the Miller's Family Inside)
Edges:Charismatic, Beast Master
Gear: Plate Corselet, Plate Leggings (Greaves), Short Sword, War Horse (Achilles), Steele Helmet (Close Helm)

More About Disney's Phoebus.
Creation Notes:
I had no Idea where to start with Phoebus, I could barely remember his name. So I watched the movie again—which allowed me to write up both Esmeralda and Phoebus. The Figure looks like he has Plate arms (vambrace), and gauntlets, but in referencing the film he is wearing a Tunic and Gloves—the figurine is just cheaply painted (it's a Burger King Toy, you can't really expect much) his arms should be blue and the Gloves should be brown.

Disney's Esmeralda
Description: Long Black Hair. Eyes of Emerald Green. Gypsy
Her Gypsy band has come to Paris for the Festival of fools. She showed no repulsion at the sight of Quasimodo, and showed compassion to him publicly, as a result she is wanted by the royal guard as directed by the Minister of Justice, Jean Claude Frollo.
Rank: Novice
Attributes: Agility d8, Smarts d6, Strength d6, Spirit d6, Vigor d4
Skills: Fighting d8, Guts d6, Notice d8, Stealth d8, Streetwise d6, Perform d8
Pace: 6 Parry: 6 Toughness: 4 Charisma: 0*
Hindrances: Wanted (Major) She is wanted by the Minister of Justice Jean Claude Frollo. He has sentenced her to death, but secretly lusts after her and will offer her a pardon if she consents to be with him. Outsider (Minor)
Edges: Attractive, Beast Master (Djali)
*As a Gypsy, Esmeralda is an outsider—and as such will have a -2 charisma when dealing with those that are not Gypsies. But she is obviously Attractive, so she has the attractive edge and will have a +2 charisma when dealing with those that know her, or those not concerned with the anti-gypsy agenda.
——————–——————–——————–——————–————————————
More About Disney's Esmeralda.
Creation Notes:
Esmeralda is an outsider. It's her outsider status that allows her to see through Quasimodo's hideous exterior. But she is also attractive, and in Savage worlds those two things cancel each other out. So with a character like this, the charisma modifier would need to be handled in a situational manner. Also, she appears to use Magic—which is part and parcel to her wanted status. The magic she uses is not Arcane however, it is just prestidigitation and misdirection, as this takes place in a real world setting. So in the instance where she dissapears in a puff of smoke—in game that would be handled with a perform skill check. —One more thing. The eyes of this figurine frighten me, I'm going to fix them with Photoshop when I get the chance. That's not the only thing wrong with this figure, but it's the only one I feel I can fix.

Just to put this out there.
We stopped at Burger King and used a 2 for 1 coupon for Whoppers the other day, and I noticed that they are selling these. (Pardon the Crummy Photoshop Job)
They are so tempting and would be perfect for the site, but I don't frequent fast food at all and couldn't really justify the cost. But if someone out there wants to see a character on the site. I'm not above recieving donations. The rule for a character appearing on the site, is that I must have the toy/figure in possession (I know I fudged a little with Maleficent, let's say that's the exception that proves the rule) to take the proper photograph (and I want to stick with toys that could be used on a 1" grid, so I want to keep them roughly 3 inches tall or less—unless they're some sort of monster [stay tuned, I've got a great one that breaks the height rule]).
So if you want to see a character on the site, send me the toy/figure.

Disney's Megara

More About Disney's Megara.
Creation Notes:
Meg was pretty straight forward. I kept thinking that she needed some Edge that allowed her to recognize the supernatural (based on the scene where she recognizes Pain and Panic in the guise of Cuddly Forrest Creatures, but none of the core mechanics really seemed to fit that, so I gave her Knowledge: Underworld and the GM can figure out how to fit that campaign as far as game-play.

More About D.C. Comic's The Penguin.
Creation Notes:
I used the Necessary Evil rules as The Penguin is a Comic Book Villain. I gave him an extra Minor Edge instead of a Major one. I also reduced his pace because of his distinctive waddle.

——————–——————–——————–——————–————————————
More About Disney's Prince Phillip.
Creation Notes:
Prince Phillip is a Novice Character, but has to be able to defeat Maleficent. The Sword and Shield given him by the Fairies therefore must be of sufficient strength. These are ridiculously powerful weapons, so the caveat is that they only exhibit their strength when used versus their namesakes opposites. Also note that in the film he was aided by the Fairies Flora, Fauna and Merryweather against Maleficent's Goons and then backed off when Maleficent herself showed up. Philip seemed to land a handful of lesser hits. Maleficent Mostly used Fiery Breath, she hit twice (the shield protected him), missed twice, and knocked the shield from his hand once, she snapped at him with her jaws in sets of two attacks (Improved Frenzy). Phillip must have rolled an 8 for damage on three of his hits and his throw of the sword, or had his dice explode on the throw to take Maleficent down.

Disney's Quasimodo

Pace: 5 Parry: 2 Toughness: 7 Charisma: -4
Hindrances: Outsider, Loyal, Ugly
Edges: Arcane Background: Faith
XP: 10
Power Points:10
Powers: Elemental Manipulations: Stone (Quasimodo creates companions of the stone gargoyles near his loft in the cathedral)
——————–——————–——————–——————–————————————
More About Disney's Quasimodo.
Creation Notes:
Quasimodo was a fairly straight forward creation. I gave him 10 XP (so I could bump his attributes up one and raise a skill point.) I did give him 3 minor hindrances, which is not strictly to the rules. I also reduced his pace due to his physical limitations. Remember this is Disney's Quasimodo, so to account for the Gargoyle companions I gave him elemental manipulation, since the personalities of the Gargoyles are fragments of his own—they appear to be out of his imagination, but are able to affect things physically on more that one ocasion in the film.

More About Disney's Beast.
Creation Notes:
I created The Beast as a normal character, and then looked up Bears, Wolves, and Bulls and adjusted the attributes and abilities as seemed appropriate. The trick with creating a lot of these characters is the character development that they go through in the course of their stories. The Beast's hindrances for example are there strongly in the beginning—but have faded by the end, and if I had a toy of the non beast version of the character, there would be a separate character sheet for that purpose. So I just made a judgment call and wrote up what he was like somewhere in the middle of the movie, where he had softened a bit, but still had some beastliness in him.

Creation Notes:
Again I ended up using Necessary Evil for the handling of powers because it allows a second Major Hindrance. Again I added a perform skill to account for singing and dancing, which is not a standard skill, but it is mentioned in Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition under the converted settings section (p.137-138). I gave her 5 xp and used that to give her another edge—so she can be attractive and communicate with animals.

Creation Notes:
I used Necessary Evil for the handling of powers because it allows a second Major Hindrance. I right out cheated and gave her the a perform skill with d8, which is not a standard skill, but is mentioned in Savage Worlds Explorer's Edition in the converted settings section (p.137-138) ; then to make it fit the rules better I upped her rank to Seasoned.

Lately I find Myself Obsessed with Savage Worlds.
So, I've been toying around with the possibility of actually running a Savage Worlds game. I've only played in a handful of role play campaigns—mostly D20—and I have never been the GM.
Scratch that, I did try to run a game back in. . . 2001 I think. The only book I owned at the time was a first printing of 3rd Edition GURPS. I had no idea what I was doing. I had never played in a game before, and although we had a pretty good time, I didn't know all the things that a GM should do—I was winging it and had no story in mind.
The only thing I remember about the campaign is that one of the characters was in his bathrobe; in his bathroom one minute and standing in the middle of a large field facing a cavalry charge.
But now that I've played in some actual games, and I know what a GM actually does, I look back on that experience and pretend it never happened.
I was introduced to a gaming podcast by P of Howdy!! about a year ago, and found myself obsessed with a little game called Savage Worlds.
Let me share a little something about myself. I have a tenancy to obsess and horde. If I enjoy something, I must have it all. This is what led me to GURPS so many years ago. It's that whole generic thing. To me that means that you can run any kind of game high fantasy to hard core sci-fi, historical drama to apocalyptic horror—this greatly appeals to me—one game to rule them all, mwahahahahah!!
The first real game I ever got to play in was a Dungeons & Dragons(D&D) [3.0 for those that care]campaign. Then I met another DM and got to play in another D&D game[3.25], we tried one session of Spy Craft, but that didn't pan out; and I am currently involved in a GURPS Supers campaign.
I like D&D for a fantasy setting, it has an epic, grandiose, feeling, and the idea that d20 could be used for any setting is a good one, essentially Wizards of the Coast (WotC) were trying to make their system as generic as GURPS. But the race/class thing kind of messes that up; that and the fact that there isn't a generic d20 rulebook with D&D as a campaign setting.
I like GURPS, but because it is so generic the rules are all inclusive, there are rules for everything. You don't have to play a super crunchy game (to the uninitiated crunchy comes from numbers crunching and is used to describe a game where a lot of numbers are used to determine the outcome of a given situation), but you do have to wade through all the rules to decide what you are and are not going to use.
Along comes Savage Worlds, I can play any kind of genre I want with the core rulebook, so it's just as generic as GURPS, but the rules are simpler—and it seems to have that same heroic feeling that D&D has.
Needless to say, I've become obsessed with this game. . . I bought the core rulebook; another big plus is that the core rules are only $10 vs. D&D at $67 [Amazon reduced price] or GURPS $50, [also Amazon reduced price] that's a steal.
Which brings me to this site. I'm not quite ready to run a game—but I am mentally preparing myself to do so, and this site is part of that, and I didn't want the readers of my primary blog to get turned of by the sheer redundancy of these posts; they deserve to be put in their own place.
This is getting long, but bear with me. First let's talk about miniatures. The first role playing games are descended from historical war gaming; where small models or markers are placed on a grid to keep track of your. Using models on a grid has been a part of role playing since the beginning of the hobby, and yet they've never been required. I myself find myself in the no grid camp mentally. I don't want to have to buy and buy and buy, more and more stuff in order to play the game. I like that all you need to play is a pencil, some paper, dice and a rulebook. My $10 investment will last and last and last. Granted—for a gaming company to stay in business they need to continue to sell product—so I understand why miniatures, maps, and new editions are sold.
My mind has been changed a little by Pinnacle Entertainment Group (publisher of Savage Worlds). I am no longer 100% against miniatures. Fist of all, because Pinnacle does miniatures a little different. The figures they sell are paper. Here's a picture so I don't have to describe it.
This brings the cost down considerably. I thought that this was a good Idea for those that like figures, but I was still not sold on it, then I read The Making of Savage Worlds. Quoting Shane Lacy Hensley Now:
"Tools of the Trade
Miniatures, miniatures, miniatures. Use ‘em. Most of those who like Pinnacle’s kind of games already do. It doesn’t matter if your minis don’t look anything like what they’re supposed to be—just put something out on the tabletop so that everyone understands what’s going on. We make Cardstock Cowboys for our Deadlands and Hell on Earth lines for those who don’t want a ton of lead, and genuine sculpted minis for those who do. But even gaming stones, bottlecaps, or the always-convenient dice work just as well.
I know some of you out there are very esoteric gamers. You’re not looking for a role-playing wargame—you’re looking for deep character development and plot advancement. But using miniatures and a battle mat will help you do both. While it may look and feel like you’re being too technical, what you’re really doing is helping everyone understand the situation as you see it. How many times in a game have you described a room, and then, a few rounds later, realize your group doesn’t have a clue about their relative locations or where they’re at? The point, of course, is that the more everyone understands their environment, the more they can interact with it. Tell someone “There are four orcs in the room,” and he’ll probably say “I attack.” Show him where they are and he’ll start positioning himself, using teamwork with the other players, and perhaps use whatever else is in the room to help win the fight instead of just swinging their sword.
2009 Update: I’ve see many comments over the years about RPGs and miniatures, particularly from those who are turned off by them. I get that, and you definitely don’t have to use them to enjoy our game. But I’d recommend those of you who don’t try it next time, whether it’s with Savage Worlds or D&D or whatever else you’re playing. I’ve run literally thousands of games over the years with everyone from close friends to total strangers at conventions. In my experience, miniatures encourage more roleplaying and use of the environment. Communicating what’s in your head is really difficult, but show a player even the most basic sketch map and his hero’s position and he’ll start thinking up all kinds of clever ideas. He’ll also be less-confused and thus more interested in your game."
So, based on that, I'm willing to give minis a try; and those who know me, know there is one particular mini of which I have an abundance...
789 plastic zombies in all, plus 12 shotgun guys, 6 pistol guys and 60 "civillians." So I was thinking of running a zombie campaign. I picked up a game at the D.I. the other day that had one special undead mini in it—yes I bought it just for that mini (well that and the super cool gyroscopic d6—I mean d3 in the shape of a d6).
So I was thinking about what other cheap minis I could use—it's the obsession kicking in. I thought Dollar Store—they have army guys and cowboys and Indians and cops (I wonder if they come with robbers) and firemen (if the cops come with robbers, do the firemen come with pyromaniacs?)—cowboys and Indians would be perfect for Deadlands. Then I realized that my daughter has all kinds of minis and I thought it would be fun to make character sheets for them, and I figured if I was going to go to the trouble of creating such character sheets, I might as well share them. (I was inspired by TheRealTony of Savage Worlds: Pop Culture Character Conversions)
So now you know why I created a new blog.
Shortly I will post my first character sheet: Disney's Snow White.
